Lux Art Institute Residency

I recently completed a transcontinental railroad voyage to the Lux Art Institute, where i'm very happy to be a resident artist for all of September. There will be a solo exhibition of my work, running from Sept 12 - Oct 31. I'll also be making a new 'moving painting', based on my train travels across the country, while staying here. Artforum Critics' Pick

Samsara

I'd like to announce my debut solo show with Pavel Zoubok Gallery, Samsara, will be opening this Thursday, April 23 from 6-8pm, and runs until May 23. I'll be showing all six of my video landscapes, plus lots of collage paintings and miniature book dioramas. It's going to be the largest solo show i've ever put together, check it out if you're in New York.

Forces of Nature

Will have a painting in the group exhibition Forces of Nature at One Art Space in lower manhattan. Check it out if you're in the area, opened until April 15.

Miami Project

Very pleased to be showing work with Pavel Zoubok Gallery at Miami Project (booth 801). The fair is opened from Dec. 2 - 7, you can find more info here.

Hunter MFA Thesis

My Hunter MFA Thesis exhibition is up now at 205 Hudson St. 2nd floor gallery, extended through June 14. I have several collage paintings, videos, dioramas, & a stereoscope on view, please come visit!

Arkell Museum & Library at Canajoharie

I'm exhibiting several collage paintings at the Arkell Museum & Library in Canajoharie, NY. It's a great library and museum, featuring a notable collection from Winslow Homer. My work will be hanging in the Community Gallery inside the library until June 1.

Remix Review

Very happy to get a positive mention in The Portland Phoenix, in a review of the ICC's traveling show "Remix". Up until March 21 at Bates College Museum of Art, it's a great survey of collage which i'm thrilled to be included. In the article, Piecing Together Meaning, author Britta Konau wrote; "and Max Greis’s video collage, which perfectly integrates various clips into a high-keyed narrative suffused with art historical references."

Kossak Travel Grant

I was thrilled to recently travel abroad on a Kossak Travel Grant from Hunter College, specifically to study the works of Hieronymus Bosch in Madrid and Pieter Bruegel in Vienna. Bruegel and Bosch are probably the two most influential figures on my artistic practice, so it was an incredible experience to see their major works in person. The Museo Nacional del Prado contains the largest collection of Bosch works, including the Haywain Triptych, Seven Deadly Sins tabletop, and the Garden of Earthly Delights, even more vivid in person than I could have imagined. Bosch's incredible use of detail, rich color, and bizarre compositions left me mesmerized and inspired beyond words.

The Prado also has two Pieter Bruegel paintings, including the terrifying Triumph of Death, which provoked a young museum viewer to exclaim to her parents 'I don't want to die young!'. After a wonderful stay in Madrid, I travelled to Vienna, where the Kunsthistorisches Museum contains the largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, including the Tower of Babel, Way to Calvary, and many more. Absorbing the vast narratives, allegories, and details infused within each of these scenes, I was able to spend several hours over the course of two separate visits, and still felt like there was much more to see. It was a truly enlightening and life-changing experience.

While in Vienna, I also saw another Bosch triptych, The Last Judgement, at the Academy of Fine Arts. Unlike most other artistic depictions of The Last Judgement, Bosch's version is basically one continuous hellscape. A wonderfully dark fantasy, with detailed torment scenes infused with a sickly humorous imagination.

After Vienna, I finished the trip with a long weekend stay in Berlin. I was able to view even more works from Bruegel, including the amazing Netherlandish Proverbs. The scene visually depicts over 100 different proverbs and old sayings, many still in use today, such as 'don't count your chickens before they hatch'.

Beyond seeing the works of Bosch and Bruegel, I took in many other sites, museums, food and culture in each city. It was an amazing trip, leaving me greatly inspired for my final thesis work at Hunter College, and beyond.

Hunter MFA open studios - Fall 2013

Please come check out Hunter's new MFA building at 205 Hudson St, this Fri 6-10pm & Sat 2-6pm, for our Fall 2013 open studios- i'm in studio 361. There's going to be some fantastic work & the new building is much easier to navigate (as opposed to Hunter's old MFA building, which was akin to the maze from The Shining).

The ICC's fantastic travelling collage show will be making its way to the Katonah Museum of Art this summer, & i'm thrilled to be included. There's a large collection of wonderful collage artists, with new additions from two of my all-time favorites: Romare Bearden & Kurt Schwitters! I'm also really happy to be participating in a discussion about my work in the show, happening on July 27th. Check the International Collage Center website for more info.

Scope New York 2013

Very pleased to be exhibiting with Arcilesi Homberg Fine Art, at the Scope Art Fair this year in New York. They've got a great collection of artists, check them out in booth G-13.

A Trip Around the World

This Friday night & Saturday afternoon- please join me at Hunter open studios, and take a surreal trip around the world in 3D! I'll be unveiling my new series of stereoscopic collages, a project that i'm really excited to show. There will also be brand-new evolutions & incarnations of my painting, video, and diorama work. This Friday, Nov. 16, 6-9pm & Saturday, Nov. 17, 2-6pm at the Hunter MFA building - 450 west 41st, i'm in studio 616. You'll be among the first to take this surreal trip through space & time, hope to see you there!

"Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center" has continued it's tour around the US, & i'm very pleased to be included in this fantastic survey of collage. Currently at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, Missouri. There's also a brand-new 96-page hardcover catalogue, check out the International Collage Center (ICC) for more information.

Unpacking My Library

"Every passion borders on the chaotic, but the collector's passion borders on the chaos of memories." -Walter Benjamin from Unpacking My Library. Dissecting the mindset of the collector, it's a fun and interesting read. There's a certain passion which Benjamin articulates, having been an avid book collector himself. "To renew the old world- that is the collector's deepest desire...". It's a great text, and i highly recommend it - Walter Benjamin: Unpacking My Library- A Talk about Book Collecting. "Only in extinction is the collector comprehended."

The Kappa Effect

Our relationship to time & space has radically evolved, from the industrial revolution of the 19th century to the digital revolution of the late 20th. A main theme in my artwork is humanity's evolving spatial and temporal perceptions (and interactions) with the world around us. Using collage, I create a temporal and spatial illusion in landscape form, by juxtaposing different parts of the world and different eras in time, right next to each other. So it was exciting to recently discover The Kappa Effect, a psychological phenomenon related to the perception of distance, time, and speed. In experiments, it has been shown that an "observer will base their judgments of the temporal separation between each stimulus, on the spatial separation between each of these stimuli." So basically, the closer things are spatially, the closer we think of them in time as well. The Kappa Effect is a temporal illusion, a phenomenon of human perception. It's an effect which i've been (inadvertently until now) utilizing in my work, in order to create a hallucinatory trip through time.
